Feature artist, Joshua De Gruchy

Let’s meet this month’s feature artist, Joshua De Gruchy who is a rising star in the Far West and beyond!
Joshua is a painter living and working on Wilyakali Country. He had a chat recently with Kelly from West Darling Arts, who popped in for a studio visit.
Joshua has been living in Broken Hill for the past two years after moving from Western Australia.
He has recently returned from a self-funded artist residency in France located south of Paris, with a group of eight artists from all over the world. Joshua comments he went with the intention of focusing on colours but after three weeks, the experience of connecting with other people became a focus.
Joshua is currently participating in a West Darling Arts Broken Hill Heritage Residency with the partner organisation of his choice, The Barrier Field Naturalist Club. Joshua chose this organisation because they produce positive change in the environment around Broken Hill and highlight the impact and relationships between people and natural environment.
In the six minute interview on Soundcloud, Joshua comments that most people  end up here by some kind of serendipitous event. Broken Hill acts as a magnet and offers space and a slower lifestyle while still allowing you to feel connected. Joshua finishes with some wise advice to take the risk and make what you want to make, regardless of what you feel you should be making (or what other people feel you should be making).
He is working towards an exhibition at Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne in February 2024.
Stay tuned for anything this young artist turns his attention to!
