 SILVER TREE SHORT STORY COMPETITION 

OPENING DATE: 1st November 2021 

CLOSING DATE: 30th April 2022

Under the Silver Tree Cooperative Bookshop is conducting a short story writing competition, with total prize money of $1,500. 

Entrants will write a short story of no more than 2000 words inspired by Rebecca West’s quote: 

 “The world is round and what might seem like the end may also be only the beginning.”

 FIRST PRIZE : $1,000 

HIGHLY COMMENDED (up to 2 at judge’s discretion) : $100 each 

ADDITIONAL PRIZES OFFERED BY OUR PARTNERS AND SPONSORS : West Darling Arts Award to a writer from Western Region* : $500 

Totally Addicted to Hair Award to a writer under 26 : $100

 Word limit: 2000 words This competition is open to all ages. 

There is a fee of $10 for each entry. Entrants may submit more than one entry. 

The winners will be announced in May 2022 at a prize giving ceremony at the Broken Hill Art Exchange (COVID-19 permitting) and broadcast on 2DRY FM. 

Silver Tree Short Story Competition: RULES 

1. The closing date for entries is 30th April 2022. Late entries cannot be accepted. 

2. The maximum length of submissions is 2000 words (does not include title). 

3. All entries must be the original and unpublished work of the entrant, and not currently submitted for publication nor for any other competition or award. 

4. The competition is open to any writer, who can submit as many entries as they choose. 

5. Entries must be typed in double spacing and written in English. 

6. Entrants must provide a separate typed cover page stating their name, address, phone number and email address. The entrant’s contact details must only appear on the cover page. 

7. Entries may be submitted in any of the following ways: 

(a) in person at Under The Silver Tree Bookshop 

(b) emailed, attached as a PDF file. Entry form may be attached as a scanned JPG image. 

(c) posted - must be postmarked no later than 30th April 2022 

If entrants require acknowledgement of receipt of a postal entry they must enclose a stamped addressed postcard marked ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. 

8. Entry fee is $10 for each work entered, to be submitted with the entry. 

Entry fees may be paid in any of the following ways: 

1. (a) by cash or EFTPOS at Under the Silver Tree Bookshop (see below for address) 
2. (b) by cheque made out to “Under the Silver Tree Co-operative Bookshop” 
3. (c) by direct deposit to our account BSB 802377 Account 37739325 

If paying by direct deposit include your name or distinctive identifier. Notify us by email.

7. All entrants must agree that Under the Silver Tree Cooperative Bookshop reserves the right to publish, broadcast or publicly perform all submitted work for promotional purposes only. Ownership reverts to the entrant after 30 June 2022. 

8. Entries will not be returned. No corrections or alterations can be made after receipt of entry. 

9. Entry is not open to members of the board of Under the Silver Tree Bookshop. 

10. No entrant may win more than one prize. 

JUDGING 

Competition judges will be appointed by Under the Silver Tree Cooperative Bookshop Ltd and the judges’ decision will be final with no correspondence being entered into. In the unlikely event that the quality of the entries is not deemed high enough, prizes do not have to be awarded.
