Clair Bates is a direct descendant of the Maliangappa/ Paakantji people of the Darling River people Wilcannia NSW. Coming from a very large Aboriginal family and a strong Aboriginal community group that resides in both Wilcannia and Broken Hill and throughout the Western NSW area, Clair grew up in Wilcannia on the “Mission”. Clair lived in Newcastle from 1967 to 1994 then Sydney, Central Coast until she moved to Wentworth NSW in 2011.

Clair paints simple, geometric designs and uses a dotting technique shared with other Aboriginal artist. Her works generally explore the stories of both Clair’s clan group from the Maliangappa and Paakantji tribes of Western NSW.
